I'ma name is Walter Fender I'm a special admissions coordinator at the McKinney Campus of Collin College I'm going to talk to you about to do a credit process today I've included my email on the slide which means please reach out just cuz you're watching this on your own doesn't mean you're going to go to the process alone so let me know and also let the door credit office know if you have any concerns I will have their contact information at the end of this presentation so jumping right into it what is dual credit dual-credit is the opportunity for you to earn both bad credit and High School Credit in one course so for example if you want to do dual-credit English instead of sign up for your high school English class which it would be English three of your junior or English for your senior you instead sign up for a college team course with us and once you complete that class you would get both high school and college credits simple as that that's exactly what dual-credit is so the benefits of taking dual-credit first and foremost like I just mentioned a couple times you get that credit for both high school and college on the next thing as a small class sizes so these classes are usually just like your high school classes meaning that there's about 20 or 30 students in them that's super beneficial when it comes to getting an educational support from your instructor in colleges universities you take some freshman year classes maybe something like Fine Arts in my case and you can take them with a lot of students me myself I had a course with 800 of the students needless to say the professor doesn't get to know you very well maybe not even get to know what it say for you to learn best in their class when it's so many of you that is exact opposite case and do a credit we make sure we keep these class sizes small so that you have the opportunity to be one-on-one with your professor more often if we don't learn from you and learn what it takes for you to be sick this one the class you also get to begin your college transcript and experience the college environment of rigor of a college course that experience will go a long way which in itself is a big benefit but it's also a big responsibility students these grades will follow you throughout your what's career so whatever Grey's you running a dual credit class that will follow you to whatever schools you go to afterwards so you want to make sure you being good stewards of that responsibility another benefit is how much you will save Collin College has the lowest tuition in the state of Texas he said that dual-credit English class I was telling you about that is a 3-credit hour course and will cost you $164 that same course at different colleges and universities could cost you thousands that means that taking one course picking a couple horses is literally going to save you thousands of dollars another benefit of transferability these courses will transfer to public schools in the state of Texas that doesn't mean they won't transfer out-of-state or they won't transfer to a private school that just means it's an extra step in the process. hang out to those schools finding out exactly how they will transfer and if they will transfer for the most part these core classes was definitely up you to reach out to your schools and even then I would suggest you do that with a public school just to make sure it's going to see your degree plan the way you so that Lisa is doing great right for you it's a huge responsibility is a huge time commitment so if you have a bunch of extracurriculars if you got other things going on that you need to really be paying attention to the credit might be better for in the future and maybe not right now but here's some things to consider when you're making a decision the first thing will be the importance of attendance and time management that's what I was mentioning how if you have a bunch of other things going on you need to try later because for every one hour you spend flask the rule of thumb is that you'll be spending two hours outside of class studying or working on assignments I'm so if you have a bunch of other things going on and you can't give as much attention to your class or you going to have to miss Class A lot cuz your extracurriculars then maybe do a credit something try later on and maybe not right now dancers and no it's just not right now that also leaves me to talk about how these courses are on Collins calendar so that being said if there's a holiday the high school has that we don't over at calling you for it has a Siamese for you or expect you to be in class you would have to be there on that doesn't happen too often because we sync up our calendars as much as possible but that's something you should be aware of the next thing is maturity for subject matter in the college classroom environment but we won our needs to be mature in the classroom be able to navigate the classroom effectively so that they can be successful but also that leaves me to talk about where that's an English class or history class we're dealing with subject matter that's Geared for college-age adults is nothing that's too out of hand at 2 control when it comes to subject matter but we just like to set that expectation right up front the next thing is getting to know the course syllabus in your instructor some of you may be familiar with using the syllabus in your classes the syllabus contains the guidelines and the policy for the classroom it's away from the instructor kind of set the expectations not only for what they expected you before what you can expect from them in the classroom so utilize it hold onto the syllabus for every class you take and make sure your body by the guidelines and policies and do text SMS syllabus also get to know your instructors very important I talk about us keeping our class sizes small so that you get more one-on-one time take advantage of that that's something that many students of miss out on is working with the instructor and using them to the best of abilities make sure you're meeting with your professor letting them know what you're struggling with or even if you're doing great with working for you just building that open relationship with your professor is going to go a long way so make sure you doing that the last couple things go hand-in-hand what's the student code of conduct and a drop and withdrawal deadlines at just for us to say you're a full-fledged Collin College student so you have to buy buy a code of conduct you have to understand I deadlines when it comes to dropping and withdrawing in our policies overall so you just want to be involved with that and understand those things so that it benefits you during your time of dual-credit Purpose soap opera is a federal law that ensures the privacy of student educational records is similar to how a HIPAA law will protect your medical records not anyone could come off the street ask about your latest lab results here latest doctor appointment right same thing with FERPA nobody but the student can access their records without Express written permission okay and indoor credit that affects parents as well cuz he's our high school students right parents themselves can't even reach out to a professor to get late assignments for their students or check on their students progress the professors are federally prohibited from doing that so it's a great opportunity for students to learn the college process and take on new responsibilities when I talk dual-credit being or having a bunch of benefits this is where the responsibility comes into play students themselves have to reach out to their professors or let their professors know when they're going to miss class ahead of time so they don't miss out on any opportunities to complete assignments or miss out on any parts of the lecture everything when it comes to dealing with their class is now on the shoulder of the students and parents when the situations where you do need to be involved that is information that you do need to know that's when you should be reaching out to the high school or myself so I can be the show me any kind of help navigate those types of things is a snapshot of the Fall 2020 course offerings as I mentioned before these classes will transfer to public schools in Texas are they are apart of the Court as well as these classes will be held on your high campus so you won't have to travel to college campus or figure out how you're going to get our campus during the school day all these classes are at your school or we have Collin College professors who teach at the school during these class time so that they can be free free college courses is a snapshot of the enrollment process just so you guys know we're going to be talking about in just a second the first step is meeting with your high school counselor II is applying for admission the third removing all holes from your account for registering for your class if I paying for your classes someone start with your high school counselor every course you take for dual-credit or any college course you take while you're still in high school your high school must approve all classes system sure you're taking the classes at appropriate for your high school completion and also anything that can help you of course along in your college completion is well there a big part of the process so where are you taking classes in fall spring summer your high school has to approve them with Lyft no credit or was it just for college credit also known as concurrent credit but yes you must have written permission from your high school to make changes to your door credit classes as well if you want to drop or withdraw that's also going to take approval from your high school so to apply permission you will complete the application that apply. Collin.edu that is our personal website for the application of the application for fall 2020 is open now and before you can continue on and turn in your paperwork for anything else to be processed in your location for dual-credit this initial application must be done so please make sure that is fully processed before you start turning your paperwork and trying to move on to the final steps are some application tips first and foremost when you go to apply that collin.edu and you create an account please use your personal email do not use your high school email because that will go away when she graduate from high school and we don't want you to have any trouble getting back to access any of this information once you open the application on the first page they're going to ask for your social security number please list that that's going to save you some trouble later we do need it for tax information so please list that there as you complete an application I'm later on I believe second or third page you will find a section title intended academic go underneath that you will see a question to ask are you a dual-credit student select yes just like on the image to the right for dual-credit because you are the greatest student and that's how we track of you that's how we access your name for grades for rosters anything like that that will pull you from our student they specifically Nexus selecting your major you can actually select any major but if you want to keep it General I suggest you put assoc of Arts or so science you can always go back in and change that later or at a later date once you figure out what you want to do or after you talk to an advisor on our campus or even your college and career counselor but for now I would suggest associate of Arts or associate of science this application does pick out your residency which picks out your tuition rate so please make sure you're answering these questions correctly us so that we can make sure we are charging you the right to wishon and finally once you complete the application you get a welcome email about 3 to 5 business is later you will get another email that confirms that your application has been processed it will include your caller ID number which is known as a cwid it would include your Colin email address and it would include your cougarweb username and password as well like I said that confirm that your application has been processed in full and you can now start continuing on with the process so what is cougarweb online portal is the student portal so that's where you can take care of most of your current business, as I mentioned before you get the information that's an email from us that is where you can add and drop your classes that is where you can complete any online trainings you can access your calendar email pay your tuition a whole bunch of things are done here and most likely if you're looking for something pertaining to your Collin College that isn't anything like that it will be found on cougarweb okay so please login and get familiar with that as soon as you get that information you may even want to go in it and complete the campus safety training as soon as you get that login but I'll tell you more about that in a minute so what is a hole each and Michigan State will be listed as a hold on your account meaning if you try to go in and register as soon as you got granted admission you will not be able to do so it will say you have a hold on your account every time you turn in something is missing a hold is removed all that's there just to make sure that we have everything we need before you register for a class the first hole will be the high school for Mission form you're going to get very familiar with this form every single semester you take a class with us while you're in high school you have to turn in one of these and once again with that fall spring summer you need to have that High School permission and this is how we do that so at the top are going to include all of your information or what term you're fine for with your new returning student Your Name ID number all that good stuff is included right at the top of this the first page there's a space for the student signature is a space with A Parent's signature if your under 18 please make sure your signatures are deer or this will not be able to be processed and students also read through this information cuz there's a lot there you want to make sure you know what you're I need and what we expect of You by you signing a so please read that parents as well as also blurred for you down at the bottom of the first page as well on the backside this is meant for High School staff to complete them said they would let us know what classes a student is taking whether it's for dual-credit or just college credit they're going to let us know if they're eligible for any TSI waivers in the middle box right below that they're going to let us know if they're on the free and reduced lunch program and finally going to sign to let us know that they approve all this information this is exactly how we get that High School approval I was mentioning your step 1 this is how we know you're in the correct classes and you can be in dual-credit so once again every single semester we will need this at one of the nun on the permission form this is that mean you're in your classes what you turn in saying this just remove one hold from your account make sure that once you completed the process you actually go in and register for your classes online through cougarweb we've had scenarios for students turn to send you think they're done you are not. okay you still have to go in complete whatever paperwork is to have to complete and then register for your classes next of the TSI so the TSI will measure your college readiness and reading writing in math those are all three sections of the test I miss tax taking on a computer and it takes about 4 to 5 hours if you want to complete in one sitting fortunately for you guys you have a 13 day window to complete the TSI if you start one day you can come back the next day and do another section of the next day or do another section or you can break it up what did you want within that 13 day window you have that option OneNote is the only section you can't stop in the middle of and continue later is the essay section so if you're doing math and you're halfway through and you want to save and come back the next day you can but once you start essay in the writing portion you have to finish it right then and there won't be able to save and come back later but everything else is I mention you can break that up into a 13-day window so wanted to know about the TSI is used for course placement purposes for the Reading Writing and math they will Greenlight you to take specific courses so talking about Matt's if you pass the math portion of the TSI then that means you can take a math and science entry-level class right if you pass reading and writing that means you take an entry-level class in almost every other subject so that being said you can be exempt from the TSI as well so if you have qualifying scores on the SAT act that might mean you don't have to take the TSI in that subject so these can be use partially as well if you qualify for the reading and writing section but not the math section that's okay will take what you have you can take the TSI for the rest when are the Northern these exemptions is that for act you have to have that compile score 23 before we can look at your subject scores for English and math but once again if you have one and don't have the other in those subjects totally fine we'll take what you have and you can take TSI on the remaining portion if you're going to send us TSI exemption through ACT SAT we need to make sure that we have an official score report from those sources so for sat you will go to College Board website use the report code for Collin SMS an official score for act you website and do the same thing if you have that test this process does take approximately 11:12 business days which can be quite a long time so you want to make sure you're doing that early enough so that we can get that before registration and you'll be able to register if for some reason time crunch in at 11 to 12 business days is really going to push you too far out into registration there is a temporary process for us to waive the TSI hold on your account using an unofficial score report a but just let us know if you need to do that it will be a help you and give you details on that process TSI waiver so these are a little different from exemptions but you can also use these to waive the TSI if you have qualifying scores for the ACT Aspire the PSAT or the star and we can use the to waive a specific portions of the TSI as well so just like on the exemptions if you have one but don't have the other is totally fine we can take it and we can waive the TSI in the subject that you do qualify for the difference here is that your to actually be reporting this to us you won't have to do an official score report to send that to us they will put that on the backside of the permission form like I showed you earlier it would be able to process it from there so if you do need to take if you do need to take the TSI here's what you'll need to do first need to complete the pre-assessment activity after you apply for a mission and received your acceptance on that is available on our website is a link on the TSI web page where you can navigate to any regard to any of this process for taking the TSI you will usually get an email from assessment that collin.edu once you accept it and they will have all this information for the process and any links that will help you get done with the process there as well next me to pay at the cashier's office or online the cost of 20 and that was every time you take the test of whether you're taking just a math portion just to read me writing either way it will be $29 and you can take it as many times as you need the one limitation we do have is a few completed a test if you need to take it again you have to 24 hours, but other than that you can take as many times as you need walking tests are available at our testing centers on our campuses make sure you bring your receipt your photo ID and a certificate of completion for the paa so you'll be able to take the test you will not need to bring a calculator if you're doing the math portion in a question requires a calculator when will populate write on the screen for you and you can click that as soon as you complete the TSI your results will be available right then and there you can see an academic advisor or you can talk to your college and career counselor and it will help you review your results Nexus the bacterial meningitis vaccination any student any college student in state of Texas if they're taking classes on a college campus they have to provide proof of their back to you that is vaccination that is not the case for dual credit students if you're only taking a class at your high school which is your dual credit class or online you will not need to give us proof of your bacterial meningitis vaccination when you complete the high school permission form that will enable a vaccine waiver for you and that is where we will put that on your account if for any reason you end up taking a course on our campus while you're still in high school then you need to provide proof of that vaccinations and has to be from within the last 5 years and at least 10 days before the next is the mandatory campus safety training this is the only mention earlier when I said as soon as you get your cougarweb login you should log in and try to complete it this is just one of those things where you click through recent information watch some videos and take a Quizlet and the whole lotta Barclays be removed from your account within an hour or so you do have to get 100% on the quiz so make sure you're paying attention to that information so that you can pass the quiz at then after you completed all those steps you should have cleared all of the hold off your account go to register and it still won't let you for some reason it says you have a hold remaining on your account you can actually find out what that is by following the steps listed here once you get there and you see a hold that you're not really sure what it is or how to remove it we actually have a holder solution guide so available either on your school's website or thought our website is this PowerPoint and if you click on hold resolution guy it will take you right to College web page that will list out these cold and what you can do to have them removed and once again reach out to us as well where that's my cell for the Dual credit office in will give you more information on how to get that hold removed and what you need to do so once you completed all those things you removed every hold off your account you'll be able to register for your classes online and that this has to be done every semester as well so you have to register for fall classes you have to register for spring classes if you're going to take some or you have to register for those this process is done online using a crn which is known as the course registration number like you have an ID your classes have an ID you have to input that once you never get to the registration steps and click submit to sign up for your classes any of the door credit classes on your high school campus are hidden from the gym pop student and you have to use a specific 5 digit code closest ER in to get in the house tuition so once again we have the lowest tuition in the state that is based off of your residency which we figure out the application if you're in County a 3-credit hour course if you 164 if you're out of County that will be three which is just a little bit more these cost to include a $2 per semester Student Records fee on that stacked on at the end after we calculate your tuition tuition is paid per semester if you're free or reduced lunch student you may be eligible for tuition waiver which major tuition would be free so make sure you talk to your counselor make sure that's include on your permission form and what process that payment instructions so you can pay online you can just follow these steps listed here or I can come to campus and pay it or cashier's desk whatever easier for you is fine but this is available online resources the access office so the access office will provide any accommodations for students with disabilities you do have to self-identify because any accommodations you have on the high school side will not I'm actually transferred to us this is a separate application process so please start this concurrently with the Dual credit application process you just go to the access web page on Collins and you'll be able to get rolling with that you will have to provide some documentation got to have a meeting with the access advisor her information is down at the bottom if you need any assistance or her name is Megan Beasley she's awesome to work with so you definitely want to reach out to her if you need any accommodations campus resources so I mentioned earlier dual-credit students are fulfilled, college students right that means that you can access all the resources and everything else we have for our students on our campus as well as Career Services to students enter the fitness center tutoring at library all those things were I also want to highlight the last to hear The Writing Center students can get help with revision with seidner sources they can help you make sure your essay is a top-notch and they even have meetings available online as well so if you want to have a virtual meeting video chat they can do that on the same thing with the math lab they can help you with your math courses any assignments or questions you're having issues with and math they can help online as well another resource you have is your college and career counselor these are employees that are available on your high school campus a couple days a week they can help you with anything College and Career even if it's not pertaining to calling they can help you apply to other schools you want to go to that can help you with any scholarship information FAFSA what do a career assessment with you if you're not sure where field you want to go into all that is available through them and of course they can help with the door credit process as well getting but you also have to buy your own books in college to find out what books you need you just navigate to your schedule and cookie will be using two step hello I'm click on a couple links and it will show you exactly what books you need for each class you can rent or buy those books for my campus bookstore as well your college ID and parking sticker you can pick them up for free from the student engagement office if you want to take advantage of any of the resources I was talking about earlier then you will need to have your college ID so you don't have to have it for the first day of class will just pick it up at your convenience is a snapshot of some important days for fall 2020 registration will open April 14th and listed here schools registration deadline in their payment deadline any changes to that will be communicated to you so you can reach out your Council to find out for sure or reach out to us and will confirm but definitely please abide by these deadlines you want to be registered by then and you want to pay by finally if you have any questions feel free to reach out to myself for the dual-credit office will be happy to assist you as can be a long process and some cases it can be a short process in some case but whatever the case is we're here to help with that so please let us know and will be available to you thanks for listening have a good
